Consumer Protection and Advocacy Sites

You only contact these organisations if you are looking for advice or for them to help you with a particular problem. Normally, if you have problem with a business of any size you first would try and sort the problem out with the business itself and then if this was not successful you may take the problem further to one of the following organisations.

  • Australian Competition and Consumer Commision (ACCC)
    • Typically for problems with overseas subsidiaries of companies operating in Australia or large companies operating in Australia
    • Competition in the market place
      • Stop price fixing etc
    • Consumer protection
    • Fair trading
  • Office of Fair Trading (in each State) administers the Fair Trading Act of each state.
    • Each office in each state covers consumer protection like the ACCC but mainly dealing with small businesses.
